April 2014-Nebraska Sports Council

Many Lincolnites are familiar with the annual Cornhusker State Games, but may not be as familiar with the local non-profit organization that is so dedicated to putting them on. The Nebraska Sports Council has held the Cornhusker State Games annually since 1985 helping thousands of Lincolnites stay active as they train for and participate in more than 60 competitive and participation events.

Over the last 30 years, the Nebraska Sports Council has added other popular events to get the community active. The LiveWell Challenge Series has provided motivation and accountability for Lincolnites striving to live healthier lifestyles and events like the youth-only Pumpkin Run inspire wellness for those in the early stages of life.

The 30th Anniversary Cornhusker State Games will take place July 18-27 in Lincoln and the LiveWell Family Challenge and Summer Step Challenge begin on June 2. Next summer, the NSC will welcome more than 20,000 athletes from across the country for the 2015 State Games of America!

The Nebraska Sports Council has joined Partnership for a Healthy Lincoln as one of our devoted community partners collaborating with those in the community to promote health and activity through a variety of programs and events.

Dave Mlnarik, Executive Director of the Nebraska Sports Council is dedicated to improving the health of the Lincoln community through not only fitness but healthy eating as well. He shares this unique healthy recipe for the Pickle-dog, the best-ever, quick and healthy sandwich. One slice of whole wheat bread, two slices of shaved turkey breast wrapped around a zesty dill spear. Eat it like a hot dog, chase it with a handful of baby carrots and a half-pint of skim milk.
